New Zealand: WWI A VERY RARE PERSONAL ITEM OF TRENCH EQUIPMENT. The "Combination Protector", (Privately purchased body armour). The combination heart and lung protector was made in New Zealand and privately marketed to soldiers leaving for the battlefields of the Western Front. Originally containing four steel armour plates, two small and two large for wear in the tunic pockets. Sadly this set only contains the two large one for use in the hip pockets. It could also be used worn on the left chest only with the addition of a shoulder sling. The black leather carry bag also conveniently could house the storage of personal documents, pay books, diaries, letter and the type. The leather still nice and supple. A most cleaver marketing item. A most interesting item of trench warfare. Refer to page 250 "New Zealand Personal Equipment" by O'Sullivan.
