1285-1314 Philippe IV le Bel, gold 'Masse d'or', (1st issue, 1296), King seated holding sceptre & Fleur-de-lis, rev floriated cross. 6.75g. Fr-254, D-208. VF, small edge dents, very large flan. Philippe IV was the 1st French king to regularly issue gold coinage, as previous to his reign only Louis IX had minted one coin in tiny quantity.
