1914-18 Middle East Campaign Memorial Scroll 'King's Letter' & cardboard tube of posting. Printed 'parchment' scroll named in red ink: 'Pte Archibald Paton, Scottish Rifles'. 291388 Pte Archibald Paton, 1st/8th Bn Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) from Portobello, Edinburgh, Scotland. Died 4/11/1917. Buried Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Israel. The 1st/8th Bn Cameronians (SR) were attached to 156th (Scottish Rifles) Brigade of the British 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division. The Division was heavily involved in the 3rd Battle of Gaza, 31/10/1917 to 7/11/1917 which resulted in the capture of the Gaza-Beersheba line & led to the capture of Jerusalem. Of the 10 British Divisions involved in the 3rd Gaza, 18,000 were listed as killed, wounded & missing. Paton was evidently one of those killed or perhaps died of wounds - numerous Field Ambulances being in the vicinity of Deir El Belah. gVF. With internet research. Scarce Palestine casualty.
