1910 KEVII 2d Tyrian plum, new design printed in one color, DLR printing on ordinary paper, perf 14. F-VF fresh M with original gum, beautiful bright color. Stamp has scissor separated perfs indicating that this was sample of the stamp from archives from the procedure of selecting & approving the exact color to be issued (in comparison to the over dozen different colours that were prepared as colour trials). The 2d Tyrian plum was printed as replacement for the bicolour 2d green & red, and large stocks were prepared for issue, but when KEVII died on 6th May 1910, official decision was made not to issue the stamp, and all stocks were then destroyed. SG 266a cat £90,000. Great rarity of Great Britain with only less than 15 examples are recorded in private hands. Certificate can be obtained on request. (P) |
