France - Napoleon: ca1815-1816 Gentleman's folding pocket purse. Portrait to centre of Napoleon I in military uniform as he appeared ca1814-1815. Hard, composition material front & back sections with silk & red Morocco leather expanding centre (this much damaged due to folds). Hand painted portrait of Napoleon in miniature direct to glass from within. Epaulettes & decorations picked out in gold & silver. Colours fresh. Minor staining & light scratching to upper portion of portrait. Overall GC. A superb example of popularist miniature art of the first quarter of the 19th Century. |
