21227
France. ca1808 First Empire Napoleonic Grenadier of the Line Chapeau (bi-corn hat). Probably Senior NCO. Relic. Brim edges bear evidence of wide braid (probably bullion) trim (now replaced with cotton braided tape). Felted body + front/rear folds on a wire frame (this exposed in places) + small patches evident of beaver (particularly on the inner side). Numerous holes & minor tears to body + crown, some with evidence of attempted restoration. Relic. Though a battered relic, this piece conjures well the image of Napoleons' 'Finests' March across Europe. Provenance: ex the 'Marie Louise Museum' near Fontainebleau.
