1939-45 'Rakuyo Maru' (Japanese 'Hell' Ship) Prisoner of War Casualty Pacific Star group of 4: 1939-45 & Pacific Stars, War & Australia Service medals, impressed officially: 'NX46278 P F Brady'. Patrick Francis Brady, born Paddington, NSW, 1915. Enl Newcastle (resident Swan Bay) NSW, 5 July 1940. 3rd Reserve Motor Transport Co AASC, AIF. Lance Corporal POW Java, then to Thailand POW Camp. Listed as 'missing, believed deceased', (later upgraded to 'Died') 12 September 1944. No known grave, commemorated on Labuan memorial, Panel 21. 'Rakuyo Maru' was transporting over 1300 Australian & British POW's, mainly ex Burma-Thailand Railway personnel, to Japan in convoy. Torpedoed on 12 September 1944 off Hainan Island by the US Submarine USS 'Sealion'. Only 141 (incl 80 Australian) POW's were rescued by the Allied Forces. It was from these Australian POW's that the first authenticated accounts of the horrors of the POW Railways & Japanese atrocities were received by the Allies.
