1962-84 Group of 5 to Wounded In Action, 1st Bn Royal Australian Regiment and named in newspapers as the shooter of two suspected Viet Cong (incl a woman): Vietnam Campaign Medal; Australian Service Medal 1945-75 clasp 'PNG'; Defence Force Service Medal & 1 x clasp; National Medal; South Vietnam Government Star with '1960-' clasp. All impressed officially (except last 2 which are engraved officially): '214731 J.A. PORTER'. Jeffery Alan Porter, born 1944, Bellingen, NSW. Enl ARA 18/6/1962, 6 Platoon, 'B' coy, IBN, RAR, New Guinea 1964, to South Vietnam 26/5/1965. WIA, shrapnel to left side, 7/8/1965, RtA 1966, Corporal 30/6/66, SGT 1967, WO.2. 1972, to New Guinea & duty Lae with PNG vol rifles 6/5/1972-74, disch 26/11/1984, Porter is named in 'The Australian' newspaper, front cover Friday August 13, 1965 with the intimation that the victims were civilians, an embarrassment for the army at the time. This would be one of the earliest incidents of the 'Televised war' with reports such as this becoming more frequent later in the decade. Court mounted for wear but now minus mount pin. aEF.
