GDS' (officially impressed). Frederick Waller, recommended for immediate DCM but awarded MM per citation, 16.03.1943 as a Carrier Driver for the evacuation of members of his own Unit (3 Bn Gren Gds) and members of the 1st Parachute Regiment. Citation per LG 04.05.1943:'On the afternoon of February 5th 1943 during the withdrawal of the Bn together with the 1st Para Regt from Diebel Mansour, the problem of the evacuation of casualties, which were considerable became acute. The withdrawal had to be undertaken across an open plain and in full view of the enemy which was under heavy artillery, mortar & MG fire. Gdsm Waller, the driver of a Carrier showed outstanding courage in going out time & time again to bring in wounded. His cheerfulness & and his disregard for his personal safety was an example to all. He brought in may casualties at great risk to himself and it was largely due to him that the evacuation was so successful. His courage & untiring efforts to bring in the wounded provoked the admiration of all who saw him. I recommend that Gdsm Waller be given the immediate award of the DCM.' Court mounted for display.
