1902 'Burgers Pond', fine beard type, dies by Leonard Wyon. These 'Transvaal sovereign' gold coins of the South African Republic were ordered from the Heaton mint in Birmingham by Thomas Francois Burgers the president of the ZAR. However no further minting was approved as the members of parliament were not impressed at not being consulted beforehand, and they disapproved of the use of the president's own portrait. 7.98g. Fr-1, KM1.2. Only 695 minted with a very low survival rate. Graded ANACS 'F12 details, mounts removed'. A respectable looking example of this rarity which was South Africa's 1st gold coin. (P)AVAILABLE at A$6000
