1285-1314 Philippe IV le Bel, gold 'Masse d'or', (1st issue, 1296), King seated holding sceptre & Fleur-de-lis, rev floriated cross. 6.75g. Fr-254, D-208. VF, small edge dents, very large flan. Philippe IV was the 1st French king to regularly issue gold coinage, as previous to his reign only Louis IX had minted one coin in tiny quantity. Therefore, for collectors of French gold coins Philippe IV is the earliest king that can realistically be represented in their collections. 1314-1316 Louis X le Hutin, gold 'Agnel d'or', (1315), Pascal Lamb looking left with cross & banner, inscr 'LVD REX' below, rev floriated cross. 4.04g. Fr-259, D-234. gVF/aEF, with sl undulating large round flan. The only gold coin minted during the short reign of Louis X, who was only the 3rd French king to issue gold coinage.
