Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Bronze Follis (3.83g). Londinium (London) mint. Struck AD 319. Laureate, helmeted, and cuirassed bust right / Two Victories standing vis-a-vis, holding between them shield inscribed VOT/ PR in two lines over altar; PLN. RIC VII 161; RML 902 (forthcoming, this coin plated); C&T 9.01.011.aEF, for this interesting type! Coinage from Londinium, Lugdunum, and Treveri was central to western imperial propaganda in the early fourth century, with Constantine and Licinius using varied reverse types to project strength, peace, and prosperity. Their uneasy alliance collapsed into war in AD 316, a brief peace followed, then renewed conflict in AD 324, ending with Constantine?s victory at Chrysopolis and the fall of the Licinii. Cf; for the most recent and same type See; CNG A549/680 Hammered USD$475.
