Mafeking Siege: 1 Shillings blue & green, January 1900, prefix A, 'Issued by the Authority of Colonel R.S.S. Baden-Powell', with stamp duty 'Bechuanaland Protectorate / One Penny' embossed stamp, with numbered counterfoil at left, showing it came from a special booklet (most of these notes were issued in stapled pads without any counterfoil). P-S651a cat US$1500++ plus large premium for the intact counterfoil. This originates from a partial booklet ex John Ineson collection, and previously no examples with intact counterfoils were recorded. Choice UNC in absolutely pristine fresh original condition. 2020 Ceremuga certificate of authenticity. Mafeking notes extremely rare in such high grade - previous examples from same source sold for between $1700 - $2800 + commission in our earlier auctions. (P)

(Printed with the 'blueprint' process, and the detailed design shows the Union Jack flying above the howitzer named 'Wolf', with Baden-Powell standing beside, along with armed men & a woman). With black h/s 'ISSUED BY PAYMASTER B.S.UPINGTON' at top & h/s of the Border Scout arms at left with jackal in circular frame & crown above, manuscript text at centre 'Pay to bearer the sum of two pounds for pay / J Birkbeck Major OC'. P-S715a listed but unpriced. 2018 Ceremuga certificate of authenticity. Graded PMG 40 Extremely Fine, with overall much nicer fresh condition than the technical grade suggests, with bright non-faded writing. Great rarity of significant historical interest. (P)
