A classic account of the 1629 wreck of the VOC flagship Batavia off the Houtman Abrolhos and the ensuing mutiny and massacres, drawing closely on contemporary testimony (notably Commander Francisco Pelsaert?s journals) and the author?s 1963 diving expedition that located the site and recovered relics, including coins, alongside on-site observations that helped shape early Australian maritime archaeology. Paperback in the original pictorial card covers, illustrated throughout. A key reference for the Australian and New Zealand tradesmen?s tokens series (1849 to 1881), setting out the issues and varieties with useful historical background and clear working detail for attribution. A very nice copy overall, the wraps showing only light wear at the edges and corners with a little creasing, mild toning and a touch of foxing at the front, the main text clean and sound, with a few old ownership notes on the title page.
