11977
1902 'Burgers Pond', fine beard type, dies by Leonard Wyon. These 'Transvaal sovereign' gold coins of the South African Republic were ordered from the Heaton mint in Birmingham by Thomas Francois Burgers the president of the ZAR. However no further minting was approved as the members of parliament were not impressed at not being consulted beforehand, and they disapproved of the use of the president's own portrait. 7.98g. Fr-1, KM1.2. Only 695 minted with a very low survival rate. Graded ANACS 'F12 details, mounts removed'. While as expected from the grade there is considerable wear, it is still a respectable looking example of this rarity which was South Africa's 1st gold coin. (P)

11981
1902 Transvaal Boer War gold 'Veld Pond'. Emergency issue 'ZAR 1902' rev 'EEN POND'. Authorized by acting President Schalk Burger, with dies made by PJ Kloppers, struck at Pilgrim's Rest using equipment from a mining engineering/maintenance workshop (thus its 'Veld' or 'Field' Pond nickname). Fr 4. KM 11. Graded NGC 'AU details, removed from jewellery', which has resulted in surfaces that are a bit bright but still with full details. Quite sharply struck for issue. Only 986 minted with a very low survival rate. Attractive high grade example of this famous rarity. (P)
