Superb fresh UN, mnr gum stain at top & small tear on back, only folded once. (In November 1882 the new Stamp Duties act made both embossed & adhesive stamps valid for all purposes. This meant that in addition to the St George & Dragon, & small Platypus adhesive stamp duty issues, the large Platypus embossed Stamp Duty designs were also officially authorised for postal use, although that might not have been the intention of the postal authorities. Thus the Platypus embossed issues could be legally used on postal articles, & examples of the 1d, 2d & 6d values are known, only several of each recorded mostly used, although their creation & usage is somewhat shrouded in mystery). This stamp was prepared as part of the new 1867 series of 6 denominations 3c to 80c, but before they were issued it was decided to change the postal rates & introduce a new 2c value. This new 2c was then prepared in green & thus the 3c changed to grey/drab colour, & all sheets of the 3c green were then officially burned, only couple single stamps retained in archives, Fresh UN (it was never gummed), pressed diag crease & expertly recoloured surface rubbing etc, but beautiful bright colour & fantastic appearance. 3426 Click for more photos | 1905-18 cover with violet strike of cachet I 'TRISTAN DA CUNHA' weakly inked as usual, to England, sl roughly opened. (Cover addressed to Mrs Gertrude Anderson, & according to earlier owner's research, was carried on the Norwegian ship 'Trio' which called at Tristan on 11 December 1917. It was sent by Agnes Glass on 26 Nov 1917 to Gertrude Anderson thanking her for a parcel she had sent to the island, & giving details about herself & the island, which was then published by Mrs Anderson in 'The Times' on 1 January 1918. While that original letter is not present here, the lot contains a letter written by Mrs Anderson to J.
